It explains why one editor or capitalization tool might produce:

Gone With the Wind

while another produces:

Gone with the Wind

The first can follow APA-style capitalization because with contains four letters. The second follows systems that leave with lowercase. A result can therefore be correct under one guide and incorrect under another.

Chicago made the subject even more interesting in its 18th edition. It changed its longstanding approach and now generally capitalizes prepositions of five letters or more in titles. Older advice saying that Chicago lowercases every preposition is therefore outdated.

What the major style guides do

Guide or context

Typical approach

APA Style

Uses title case for paper titles and headings, but sentence case for the titles of books, articles, reports, and webpages in reference-list entries.

Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition

Uses title case for English titles and generally capitalizes prepositions of five letters or more.

MLA style

Uses headline-style capitalization for titles of English-language works. The two elements serve different purposes and are governed by different APA rules.

AP is also context-dependent. A newsroom headline is not necessarily capitalized the same way as the title of a book mentioned in the article. That is why “I use AP style” is not, by itself, a complete answer to every capitalization question.

Which style is easier to read?

For long digital headings, sentence case is often the more comfortable choice because it follows the capitalization pattern readers encounter in ordinary prose.

That is not merely a personal preference. Google recommends sentence case in headings and titles to support readability and navigation. Microsoft also recommends sentence-style capitalization for most titles and headings, describing it as more readable and easier to localize.

That does not make title case unreadable. Short title-case headings can be clear and attractive:

Choose the Right Writing Tool

How to Edit Your First Draft

Sentence Case vs. Title Case

The difficulty becomes more noticeable when a heading grows longer:

How to Choose the Right Capitalization Style for Every Heading in a Long Business Report

Compare it with sentence case:

How to choose the right capitalization style for every heading in a long business report

The second version has a calmer rhythm. The first may still be perfectly correct, but the length makes every capitalized word more visually prominent.

The longer the heading, the stronger the case for sentence case.

Does title case look more professional?

Not automatically.

Title case often creates a more formal or traditional impression, while sentence case can feel more conversational. But sentence case is used throughout highly professional documentation from companies such as Google and Microsoft.

Capital letters are not tiny neckties. Adding more of them does not automatically make writing more professional.

Professionalism comes from clarity, consistency, and suitability for the context. A law firm, academic journal, or book publisher might prefer title case because it matches an established convention. A software product or help center might prefer sentence case because it supports a simpler, more direct voice.

Neither choice is inherently smarter or more authoritative.

When should you use sentence case or title case?

Start with any rule you are required to follow. It means comparable elements must be treated the same way.

What looks careless is random variation at the same level:

What Is Sentence Case?

Why title case is more complicated

Which Style Should You Use?

How consistency helps

Choose one system for every heading of the same rank and record the decision in a brief house-style guide.

For WordCounter, the rule could be:

Article titles use title case. Citation styles frequently normalize titles according to their own rules.

APA reference entries use sentence case for many titles.

MLA formats English-language work titles in headline style.

Chicago applies its current title-case system.

A title printed entirely in lowercase on a book cover might therefore be recapitalized in a bibliography. Conversely, a heavily capitalized webpage title might be reduced to sentence case in an APA reference.

Follow the citation guide rather than assuming the source’s visual styling must always be copied.

What about all caps?

ALL CAPS is not a third solution to the sentence-case-versus-title-case question. It is a display treatment.

It can work for a very short label, logo, or intentionally forceful design element, but it is a poor default for headings and body text.
