Alphabetical List of US States

alphabetical list of states

When searching for an alphabetical list of all 50 states of the United States, these lists are often displayed in a way that makes it difficult to copy for your own use. Many times they’re displayed in two to four columns so when it’s copied, the states aren’t in alphabetical order when pasted into a new document. For that reason, we have creates a list of all 50 states in alphabetical order in a single column so it can be used by others who need it for school, business or some other project.

  • This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for putting together a simple and clean list of all the states in the US. So many of these have extra stuff in them so that it’s impossible to use them for myself. I just wanted an easy list to copy and that’s exactly what you have provided here. This will make my school project one hundred times easier. Thank you.

  • Why are the lists of US states always in alphabetic order and not in order from west to east? I’m trying to learn all the states and I need to know them from west to east, not in alphabetical order. That type of list would be much more helpful than this one!

    • Because most people start with the states closest to them and then learn from there. No two lists would be the same. Listing the states in alphabetical order is the easiest way for everyone to be on the same page.

    • I agree that it would be helpful if they were in a kind of order as to their location because it’s not the names I struggle with, but their location. It just depedns on what you are using the list for.

  • What about Washington DC? Shouldn’t that be included on the list? I know it isn’t a state per say, but it’s part of the mainland USA, so it will be on maps. I think you should have included Washington DC as part of the alphabetical state list.

  • This is so helpful. Thank you for posting it. It sure will be handy for my kids who will need to know these states next year at school. Now I can easily print out a list for them to help them study!

  • Great, I needed this. I’m so happy someone posted this. It will definitely save a lot of time and effort. There really is no reason that all states shouldn’t be listed in alphabetical order to make it easier on students who need to list them.

  • You should include the alphabetical order of the states abbreviations in your list. This would be helpful because a lot of times teachers just give us the abbreviations of each state and not the full name of the state. If you could do this I would like that because it would make my life much easier.

    • I didn’t check if there already was one made with the abbreviations, but I thought that would be useful too, so here it is:

      1. Alabama – AL
      2. Alaska – AK*
      3. Arizona – AZ

*Google say not to use any of the states’ abbreviations for mailing (unimportant, this list being for school and classes, but i just thought I would mention it.)
Actually I think there is a list of these, and I did just waste some time there, but anyways I think your idea was really good anyways.
      Bye!
-Someone bored and wanting to help

  • Does anyone have an alphabetical list of all the countries in the world? This list if the states is helpful, but I also need a list of countries around the world.

  • Do you have an alphabetical list of the capital cities of each state? That would also be useful to have for students like me. You should think about adding it to this list.

    • Or the capitals in the order of the alphabetical states
For example montgomery first because it’s the capital of Alabama…
But having them in alphabetical is also useful so maybe both

      • There’s a song the cartoon Animaniacs would sing of all capitals and states in alphabetical order.. helped me remember them as a kid.. great way to never forget them. 🙂 also one on country’s.

  • This is perfect for students in the fourth and fifth grades because that’s when they study states and state capitals. If you’re a parent with a student in one of these grades, this list can help you help them study. That’s what I’ve been using it for.

  • What if I want a list of the US states not in alphabetical order but from west to east. Can you make me this list?

  • Perfect! I wanted to make a list of remaining Kmart stores by state (which are rapidly disappearing) and this helps with that.

  • Beautiful list but please add their abbreviations like MD for Maryland, VA for Virginia and OH for Ohio.

  • I have been looking for a list like this for such a long time. I have been trying to count how many states I’ve been to, and all I needed was a simple list of the 50 states in the United States of America. What a relief it was to click on this link and find EXACTLY what I was looking for. After this, I can’t wait to share with my friends and colleagues both this list, and the information that I have gained from it.

How many states have I been to, you ask? Thanks for asking. Thanks to THIS LIST I now know I have been to 24………and counting! I can’t wait to come back and update once I have visited even more

    Thank YOU wordcounter.net <3

    • Hello Pam,

I absolutely agree. Just the other day I was in need of a list of the states a part of the United States of America, and lucky enough I came across wordcounter.net. Seeing this list IMMEDIATELY brought me joy! It’s so hard to find good lists these days, especially ones as detailed as these. Because of this website, I was also able to count easily how many states I’ve been to.

How many, you may ask? Well, my answer is a hearty 17. Pam, you inspire me to visit more! Thank you Pam, thank you wordcounter.net, and thank you America for being made of SO MANY STATES. Everyday I wake up and realize how fortunate I am for the existence of such lists 🙂

  • Absolutely perfect and presented in a variety of ways depending on what purpose a United States list is required for!

  • thank you! this was very helpful and i will probably use it again. i love how it’s clean and simple and not overloaded with information! 😊

    • The ideal Instagram post is between 135 to 150 characters. While Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters long, captions get visually cut off at around 125 characters.

  • This is very helpful. My teacher found this website to look and study the 50 states! I love this website so I will come here all the time.

  • The basic list is exactly what I needed! However, there is a problem with the abbreviations you provided. American newspapers (actually, their websites mostly, though plenty of newspapers are still on paper) use a style like this: Wash., Pa., Calif., N.Y., D.C. The U.S. Postal Service uses two letters in addresses: WA, PA, CA, NY, DC – always caps, no periods. It’s easy to know what these stand for. Most Americans have started using the two-letter style, which is easy if you have a list.

  • Thank u as well for the Alphabetical State list done numerical.
But now in 2022 there are saying it’s fiftytwo States.
Can u please add them in with the fifty please so we don’t have to search…OOO
    Thank you and God Bless

  • It would be great to have a half-inch line before each state so kids can check off the state as they see a license plate.

  • Random fact: If you add all the letters of the states you would have 412 Letters.
    – NONAME 🙂
